back home again

So I took a very long break from blogging.  I didn't even think about it.  But then I realized I have no idea what's going on with my favorite bloggers, too, and I miss you guys.  So I'll be catching up here and there this week.  But it was good to unplug a little.  Not counting Instagram because that's pretty much an addiction at this point.

The littles and I had a trip back to my hometown planned since the summer is Brian's busy time at work.  We were planning on staying a couple of weeks, lounging on the beach, and seeing lots of friends and family.  And we did all that!  But a few days before we had planned on leaving, my grandmother passed away.  So Brian took off from work, and helped me throw luggage in the car, and we caravanned it up together.  He took the kiddos to his parent's house and my parents and I headed to North Carolina for my Grandmother's memorial service.  It was a bit of a whirlwind, and although it was a sad reason to be there, it was so good seeing Uncles, Aunts, and cousins- some that I hadn't seen in decades.
When I got back, Brian was already on his way back to Missouri.  So the littles and I resumed our trip as planned.  We had cousin time, grandparent time, friend time, and a load of beach time.  My parent's home is just down the road from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.  We spent more time at the beach than anywhere else, and it was lovely.  All these pictures are from one evening, since I didn't want to drag my camera bag every time we went.
Can you see Chicago there in the pink light?  I love looking across the edge of Lake Michigan and seeing that skyline.  We took the train in one day and did the Field Museum, which is a wonderful natural history museum.  I HIGHLY recommend it for families with kiddos older than 3.
On this particular night, we weren't planning on getting into the water since we had been to the beach earlier in the day.  We had planned on watching the sun sink, and then head home.  But my kids are water babies.  So shirts were stripped, and pants were soaked, and we all loved it.
It started on a such a sad note, but this trip turned out to be so good for my soul.  I saw many old friends, a few dear friends, and I got lots of extra time with a best friend that came all the way from Colorado!  My parents were wonderful as usual, letting us run rampant through their home (while it's being remodeled!) with my friends and their littles.  And every time I go back "home" to Indiana and Chicago, I realize just how lucky I was to  have grown up in such a magical place.

So what have you all been up to this July?  I'm going to go catch up and find out!

Fletcher: Both.

11

Last Saturday was our 11 year wedding anniversary!  I can't believe how quickly the years stream by.  I know I say it all the time, but I'm pretty sure I'll look back on my 30's and wonder where the heck they went.  Days spent cooking, cleaning after littles (getting bigger), school drop offs and pickups, overflowing laundry baskets, and carving out time with the kiddos make the days feel so long.  But the years are short, my friends!  These short years have been the best, though, and every bump and bend in our marriage has just made it stronger.  The early days of surprise and learning about each other have made way to a softer, more love-worn knowing of each other.  And that's what makes this marriage my soft place to land.   It's been a blessed 11 years.  It hasn't always been easy, and sometimes life has really battered our souls.  But we've been lucky to have each other.  Here's to many more years of hardship and happiness, pain and joy, loss and love, and the wisdom to see the beauty in it all.

ten year trinkets

Brian and I have followed along with the traditional wedding gifts for the past 10 years.  Year one- paper.  Year two- cotton.  Year three- leather...  Some have been difficult, some have been easy.  Like the year Brian was building a deck, the traditional gift was wood.  Easy.  The year that was fruit proved a little more difficult, because what do you give?  A fruit basket?  That's romantic.

Year ten happens to be tin for the traditional gift.  The modern gift is diamonds, so I'm second guessing this decision we made 10 years ago.  Really shot myself in the foot there.

I searched for the perfect tin present for Brian, and came up with tin army soldiers from the 1940's.  I know, not practical.  But personal and I knew he'd love them.  He and Fletcher love to line up and play with Fletcher's green plastic army men, so it was a pretty easy choice for me.  Brian gave me a lovely little antique tin jewelry box.  I love decorative boxes for some unknown reason, so he picked perfectly for me, also.
I found the little box filled with toy ephemera when I went to take these pictures.  The littles apparently approve, too.
And Brian never goes wrong with flowers.  What woman doesn't like flowers?  I'm not a huge rose fan, but Brian said these were too gorgeous to pass up.  I agree.
Our neighbor babysat, and Brian and I went out to a fancy restaurant and just talked and laughed.  It was perfect.  We want to take a mini-trip later this summer to really celebrate, but we will have to wait and see with his work schedule.  It's nearly impossible to plan ahead.

Those ten years went by in a flash.  I wish I could pause time and just revel in how happy and loving we are right now, all these 10 years later.

thanks so much for all the well-wishes and congratulations!  we read and enjoyed every comment.

10 years!

It has officially been a decade!  Brian and I got married 10 years ago on a sunny but cool day near the shore of my beloved Lake Michigan.  My family and friends were all there, and life was beautiful.  4 months later he deployed to Iraq, so we had to make the most of those 4 months.  We traveled in Europe for a honeymoon, visited friends in far-flung states, and burned through all our wedding money.  It was bliss.  The rest of the year proved to be the opposite of bliss.  They say that the first year is the hardest.  Well, we spent most of the first year apart, across the world from each other, one of us in a war.  Talking on the phone infrequently, and writing letters until my hand would cramp.
Funny enough, although we've been through two deployments in our marriage, and Brian has missed more birthdays and holidays than I can remember, he has managed to be around for our anniversary.  A well timed mid-tour R&R.  Or making it back home from deployment just the month before.  I know we have a lot of years ahead of us, and we may not always get to spend our anniversary together from here on out, but we got that first 10.

And it has been a full, blessed first 10.  5 states, 2 apartments, 3 houses, 2 kiddos, 1 dog, 1 fish, and all the joy that a full, blessed life can afford.  It has been the best 10 of my life, and I'm excited for what the next 10 hold for us.

During Brian's first deployment he sent me a poem that he wrote just for me.  It is something I treasure, and read often, especially if we're going through a rough patch.  It always softens my heart.  He said I could share it here.

I belong next to you.
Of all of the places
that I have longed for,
the place that I want most,
is the place that I can't have.
So I content myself
to live with you
inside my mind.
In there I give you
all of the things
I want to give you myself.
We build a house
and we choose each stone, brick,
tile, beam and piece of wood
very carefully.
Because this house has to last
a long time.
It's big and strong and solid,
because this is where we continue
the process of going from you and me
to us.
We spend a long time
finding just the right size
Table. One that is big
enough for noisy Children
and noisy Grandparents
and noisy friends. But,
one that is small enough
that I don't feel too far
from you when it's just us
We spend a long time
finding just the right
Bed. One that is big
enough for us and sleepy
Babies, and small enough
that you are always close to
me.
We find lights to talk by,
and lights to make love by,
and pictures to sit under and
a couch that is too big
because I want to snuggle with
You.
We fill it with things,
even though we don't really
like things. As we become
us, we accumulate the
trappings of our new
improved self. And so
our house grows and matures
and so do we. Our trees grow
and our children grow
and we grow together
and one day there is just
us:
you, me, the house, the kids, the dogs
and all of the stuff that makes us us.
And one day one of us isn't anymore
and the next neither is the other
and that's OK because the larger part of
US
Will go on being us,
The stuff, the dogs, the kids and
the house,
that I am building in
my mind.
Until I can be with you and
we can start being us,
together again.

Love always,
Your Brian

70!

A big birthday for my Dad today!  Born the day before Halloween, he's a trickster all right.  At a young age my heart would beat faster just walking up the stairs because I never knew if he might jump out and scare me.  One night when Brian and I were first dating (I was in college and home for the holidays) Dad scared both of us by jumping out from behind the door when I was coming home late at night.  There is an argument as to whether Brian pushed me to get out of the way, but I'm sure that's not what happened, hehe.

He got up and made breakfast for me and my brother every morning and packed our lunches.  Dad was the official chauffeur of the family, driving me and my friends here and there.  He taught, so in the summer we took long road trips across the country.  He loves road trips, and is currently on a road trip to Florida, where my parents live in the winter.  So he's spending his 70th birthday doing one of his favorite things: driving.

He's Bop to the littles, the best Dad to me, and Brian loves having a father in law that can direct him on woodworking and other manly endeavors like fishing and the best cars on the market.

Happy birthday, Dad!  I hope you have the best birthday ever.  70 years young!
(dad + me, circa 1978)

We love you! xoxo

friends, princesses and a doggie

I'm getting my blog up and running late this morning because poor little Rowan came down with a bug.  Which means she was up all night.  And in need of multiple bed and pajama changes.  So this mama is TIRED.  And I'm moving in slow motion.  But it was fun going through all my pictures from over the weekend and remembering all the fun we had!  The littles just loved playing with our friends, and we all had the best time.  There was a lot of play, talk, wine, and good food.  Which is pretty much the perfect combination for a great weekend.  Tara and Glenn's 5(!) kiddos are sweet and kept our littles so entertained.  As you can see!
The grownups had a bit of fun, too!  Making chalk masterpieces and rescuing toys from the roof.
And Rowan was especially in heaven because they have a sweet old dog, Sadie, to snuggle.
We left all seven of the kids with a babysitter and the babysitter's older daughters Saturday night and the grownups got a night out!  Another perfect part of the weekend.  I somehow managed to not get any pictures of Tara and Glenn's older boys- but they were around, too!  They even helped set up an elaborate train track that kept Fletcher extremely happy all weekend.
We had the best time!  And even thought Tulsa is only a 4 hour drive away, I wish it were a 4 minute drive so we could do it all the time.  Thanks for the great weekend, guys!

bleary tuesday

I have three best friends.  We've been best friends since we were very young.  Around preschool- elementary school young.  And they are each wonderful and we are like family, and visit each other like family.  Which is what we did to my friend, Tara, and her family in Tulsa over our long weekend.  And we had FUN.  So much fun that we stayed up way too late every night, and had children that woke up early, and now I'm so tired I can barely see straight.  So I have to catch up today, and give you more pictures and stories about it tomorrow.

Do you stay up too late when you visit friends and family, reverting to teenage hours?  Or do you go to sleep like a responsible adult?
