I know I mentioned my parents were visiting. They left on Monday, and we miss them! What a huge help they are when they visit. The yard gets a complete overhaul, yummy meals are made, extra books are read to littles, youtube videos of trains are shown at a moment's request, and the best part: they make things. If you've ever wondered where I've gotten my creative streak, look no further than my parents. My mom loves to create cards and paper crafts, and makes lovely quilts. My dad has been creating with wood for years and years. Furniture, wooden toys, decks, you name it. He was an "Industrial Arts" teacher, which is a fancy name for teaching wood shop. My parents are so into creating, that 35 or 36 years ago, they built their own house.
And I am lucky that they still love to create, and that they let me in on it. It has been years since I even touched a sewing machine, so while they were visiting, my mom set mine up. And she gave me a "refresher" on the machine by teaching me how to quilt! It was a very basic patterned table runner, but I am impressed I even had that in me. I won't be making any bed size quilts any time soon, but I had fun, and it turned out pretty cute. Thanks, Mom!
And what did my dad make? Well, a while ago, I ordered a few lovely items from The Curiosity Shoppe that is currently at Target. I liked everything except for the United States cheese board. I loved the concept, and I liked the online picture, but when it arrived, I was disappointed by how thin it was, and how the wood had no visible grain. A board of thick white oak later, my dad whipped this beauty up in no time!
I just need to give it a rub with some food-grade oil, and it is all set. Thick, and with a really great grain. Just what I wanted!
I know. I am lucky to have such talented people as my parents. I am doubly blessed that they are just as kind and generous as they are talented. Thank you again, Mom and Dad, for coming and sharing your time, talents, and most of all, love!
Wow that is an awesome cheese board! And I love your table runner. Your folks really are talented people!! I would looooove to be crafty enough to build my own house (despite the paralyzing decisions- what to paint this wall? should we make the kitchen white? how many bathrooms?). I think we might just go the pre-made version one day to avoid spending 129,789,436 years building the thing.

ReplyDeleteGirl, you did good on getting those corners lined up! That's my most frustrating part because even though I think I cut them all the same size, it's still never perfect. Maybe when I'm a grandma! ;) Your parents sounds pretty fantastic. That cutting board! Your dad did good! So glad you got to have some extra family time and help with the kids!
