diy hankie curtain

I've been having a major itch to fix up my kitchen a bit.  Since we are renters, there's not a lot we can do.  I would love to paint the cabinets (or change them out altogether) but that's not going to be ok.  So I had to come up with a few creative solutions to make the kitchen a little nicer.  One of the projects I worked on was this little hankie curtain to cover our hideous light over the sink.  See?  Hideous.
It was a bare bulb when we moved in, so I guess our $10 light fixture is somewhat of an upgrade.  But I wanted to cover that, too.  I picked up few vintage hankies while out thrifting, and I had the rest of the items on hand, so it was a cheap, quick, AND easy project.  My favorite kind!  Here's what I used.
I folded the hankies into triangles, and did a quick press with the iron so that they would hang over the rod easily.  Next I just adjusted the hankies on the rod to where I liked them.  I found it easiest to pre-hang the rod, but down where my short arms could easily reach.  I overlapped them to provide complete coverage of the hideous light.
Then I took my needle and thread and made little "x" stitches at about 4 different places where the hankies overlap.  This helps keep the hankies from sliding off.  I pulled the needle from the back so that my knot wouldn't show in front.
Then I hung the rod where the light would be completely covered, and that was it!  Easy.

I also love the glow of the light through the hankies, too!
I think this turned out pretty sweet.  I also think it would make a darling valance in a girl's room, right?  And you can see I added some chalkboard paper to my cabinets, which is so fun!  I'll show you the rest of my little mini-makeover next week.  The kitchen is a happier place with just a few little touch ups.

  2. Very sweet! I have been claiming I'm going to make curtains for our kitchen for close to a year now... but sewing is much more challenging than I thought it would be (and obviously I'm not investing a great deal of time). Good for you pulling this off so quickly and looking forward to seeing the rest.
